University Majors
The Department of Music offers the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in music and the Bachelor of Music (BM) degree, which is a professional degree in performance or composition. UCSB's Department of Music trains scholars and musicians of the highest caliber. Students develop their academic and musical talents to the fullest, training to become performers, composers, ethnomusicologists, music historians or music theorists. The Bachelor of Music degree is open by audition to highly qualified performance and composition students only. The BA in music includes an Ethnomusicology emphasis. The BM degree includes emphases in Bassoon, Cello, Clarinet, Double Bass, Flute, French Horn, Guitar, Oboe, Percussion, Piano, Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba, Viola, Violin, and Voice. BM students may also pursue emphases in Accompanying or Composition. Students majoring in other disciplines are able to pursue an interest in music at a less intensive level than the major by completing a minor in music. Audition required for the B.M. degree. Also offered in the College of Creative Studies (Creative Studies: Music Composition Emphasis, B.A.).
