University Majors

University of California, Santa Barbara
Law and Society B.A.

Admitted to pre-major until prerequisites are satisfied. UCSB's law and society major seeks to understand the nature of law and legal institutions from a variety of perspectives. The major draws on a number of disciplines, such as the humanities and the social and behavioral sciences. This interdisciplinary approach adds valuable depth and breadth to the study of law, and provides the student with unique insights that will enhance her or his theoretical understanding and practical application of law. The law and society major is for students who desire a comprehensive liberal education, as well as those who are planning to attend law school. Students pursuing careers in court or judicial administration, social work, government service, and teaching will find law and society to be an excellent choice of major. Likewise, students who want to become well-informed citizens in what has been described as a "legalistic age" will find law and society to be the ideal major.
