University Majors

University of California, Davis
Applied Mathematics B.S.

As any scientific field develops, such as engineering, physics, economics, biology or statistics, more sophisticated mathematical models are needed to formulate and solve basic problems. Applied mathematics students learn how to use mathematics to answer questions that are integral to the advancement of knowledge in any of these scientific fields. They then focus their studies on how math relates to topics in a specific science of their choice. One of the benefits of studying mathematics is the wide variety of career paths it provides: students with a degree in mathematics work in finance, computer programming, modeling of biological systems, computer security and cryptography and education. A 2009 study by CareerCast.com showed that the top three best jobs in terms of income and other factors were careers suited for math majors. Another recent survey by Forbes magazine shows that the top 15 highest-earning college degrees have a common element: mathematics. Mathematicians are trained to solve problems, not matter which field.
