University Majors

University of California, Davis
Mathematics A.B.

Mathematics is much more than simple arithmetic and equations; it is the study of abstract structures, space, change and the interrelations of these concepts. Mathematics is the one language in which the meaning of each symbol can be defined precisely; it can be used to describe scientific concepts and processes exactly. Mathematicians work to address some of science and society's most pressing questions. Their work bridges the gaps between scientific disciplines and provides a framework for considering problems in their purest, most theoretical form. One of the benefits of studying mathematics is the wide variety of career paths it provides: students with a degree in mathematics work in finance, computer programming, modeling of biological systems, computer security and cryptography and education. A 2009 study by CareerCast.com showed that the top three best jobs in terms of income and other factors were careers suited for math majors. Another recent survey by Forbes magazine shows that the top 15 highest-earning college degrees have a common element: mathematics. Mathematicians are trained to solve problems, no matter which field.
