University Majors

San Jose State University
Psychology B.S.

Although the question of why people do the things they do is an age-old question, the scientific study of this question, which constitutes the field of psychology, is only about 125 years old. As the field of psychology has developed during the last century, large strides have been made in acquiring new knowledge and in effectively applying the knowledge that has been acquired. The BS degree in Psychology at San Jose State University is a regimented degree plan for students who wish to develop a focused set of skills in pre-selected areas so they can apply these skills in a technical setting or seek advanced graduate training. The BS degree program has more course requirements than the BA (i.e., fewer electives). The degree plan emphasizes research focused scientific and methodological training, as well as breadth in pre-selected areas of psychology and other fields (biology, chemistry, philosophy). Areas of speciality within our department include, clinical, development, cognitive science, neuroscience, industrial and organizational psychology, human factors engineering, and more.
