Portuguese is one of the most commonly spoken languages in the world with about 200 million speakers spread though five continents. It is the official language of Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Sao Tome and Principe, Guinea-Bissau and East Timor. It is also spoken by Portuguese communities in many different countries. A large community of Portuguese Americans live in California alone. The major first develops students'' competence in the spoken and written language. At the advanced level, the major requires completion of courses in language, history of the language, literature, and the cultures and civilizations of Portugal and Brazil. At this level, students emphasize language, literature, or a combination of both.
