University Majors

University of California, Santa Barbara
Political Science B.A.

Are democracies with only two political parties more representative than those with many parties? How can governments respect diverse ethnic, racial, and religious identities, and still promote bonds of common citizenship? What should be the role of the United States in an increasingly interdependent global economy? What empirical regularities exist in how people think and act politically? Does attacking the leadership of terrorist organizations with drone strikes reduce terrorist incidents in the future? These are the types of questions that political scientists explore. The Department of Political Science offers a balanced program, emphasizing the integration of theory and practice rather than any single approach or methodology. Pre-majors are required to take lower classes in five areas: American politics, comparative politics, international relations, political theory, and research methods. Students majoring in political science choose one area of primary concentration, while also taking courses in other areas. Transfer students are admitted to pre-major status until prerequisites are satisfied.
