University Majors

University of California, Santa Barbara
History B.A.

Curiosity about one's past is a distinctively human characteristic. Unlike other species we want to understand our origins and how our present and future are influenced by our past. Without knowledge of the past we become prisoners of the present, unable to comprehend current circumstances or deal intelligently with present problems. History is the scientific study of the recorded past. History allows us to transcend our cultural limits and, through the study of other societies in other times, understand the diversity of the human experience. The Department of History is one of the largest on campus, with more than 40 faculty members engaged in full-time teaching and research. The department's size allows for a great range and diversity of course offerings and teaching methods. Students can take courses that range from the ancient world to the present, from the history of ideas to science in society, politics, international relations, gender and popular culture. Geographic coverage includes Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the United States.
