University Majors

University of California, Santa Barbara
Environmental Studies B.A.

Environmental Studies is the systematic study of human interaction with the natural environment. Established more than 40 years ago, UCSB's program explores environmental issues pertaining to the social and human environment, the physical environment, and the biological environment. UCSB offers the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in environmental studies which emphasizes the social sciences and humanities and the Bachelor of Science (BS) degree focusing on the natural and physical sciences. Both degrees recognize and address the important interrelationship between the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. The BS degree requires additional biology, mathematics, and physics courses not included in the BA degree. This is done so that a BS major will have an advanced understanding of the role that the natural and physical sciences play in environmental problems.
