University Majors

University of California, Riverside
Chicano Studies B.A.

The Chicana/o Studies major, at UCR, focuses primarily on the Chicana/o experience. The influx of immigrants from Mexico coupled with high population growth is fostering the "Re-Mexicanization of the Southwest," which in turn is engendering greater demands for Chicana/o courses. The title "Chicano" Studies was adopted instead of Mexican American Studies to describe the department's recognition of "Chicanismo," the idea of self-determination, the fostering of a cultural renaissance, and political and economic empowerment and change among California's emerging majority Mexicano community.
