University Majors

University of California, Los Angeles
European Studies(Pre)B.A.

Admitted to the pre-major status until prerequisites are satisfied. The European Studies major offers an interdisciplinary program leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree. Students are required to (1) study a European language other than English, (2) develop a historical perspective on European issues, (3) examine European culture, society, politics, and economy, and (4) acquire basic analytical and theoretical skills. Central to this effort are a series of core seminars and a senior essay to encourage majors to delve into a research topic of their choice. The curriculum is designed to serve the needs of students who wish to approach the study of Europe from a structured interdisciplinary perspective, pursue graduate work in disciplines permitting the study of Europe, and orient their professional life toward European affairs in fields such as law, business, diplomacy, journalism, and human services.
