University Majors

University of California, Davis
Linguistics A.B.

Linguistics is primarily concerned with understanding the human capacity for language. Linguists study how languages are structured, what features are common or rare across languages and how languages change over time and are related to each other historically. They also investigate how knowledge of language is acquired, how it interacts with other cognitive proficiencies, how it varies from person to person and region to region, how it structures and reflects social and cultural practices, and how it can be modeled computationally. Because of the centrality of language in human cognition and social interaction, the major in linguistics provides students with a solid foundation for more advanced study not only in linguistics but also in other cognitive and social sciences and for careers in language teaching, law, government, lexicography, speech pathology, and the computer industry.
