University Majors

University of California, Davis
Japanese A.B.

The Japanese civilization extends back more than 1,200 years. Japan has the world`s third-largest economy, is the home of numerous corporations of worldwide importance, and is renowned for major contributions to research in science and technology. Japan also enjoys global influence in cultural matters, ranging from what many consider the world`s first full-length novel to contemporary animation, electronics, games, and popular culture. As a Japanese major, you will build a strong foundation in the language, cultivate an understanding of Japanese history and society, and gain broad knowledge of Japanese culture from a variety of courses in literature, linguistics, history, art, anthropology, sociology, political science, and other fields. There are many opportunities for you to study abroad or participate in internships in Japan, lasting from a month, to a quarter, to a full academic year. The economic importance of Japan and the scarcity of those with advanced skills in both Japanese and English enhance career opportunities for our majors in a wide variety of fields including international business, government, media, education, science, and technology.
