Learning German allows you to understand the rich history of German-speaking Europe, to analyze and compare the fine literary and philosophical contributions of German-speaking authors ranging from Nietzsche and Goethe to Kafka, from Marx to Freud, and the contributions of German-speaking artists and musicians (Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Wagner, Schubert etc.). There are over 100 million native speakers of German in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. This means that, in Europe, there are more native speakers of German than there are of English or French. In addition, German is an important mediating language in Eastern Europe. Germany is also an important economic power. It was the world`s second biggest exporter in 2009 just behind China and continues to be the largest European trading partner of the U.S. and its fifth largest global partner.
