How does the mind work? This is the foundational question of cognitive science. Cognitive science approaches the study of human perception, cognition, behavior and intelligence by focusing on how information is processed, computed and transformed within the brain. The field is based upon the assumption that the mind is an information processor, and it treats the investigation of mind as an interdisciplinary endeavor informed by anthropology, biology, computer science, human development, linguistics, neuroscience, philosophy, psychology and sociology. Students interested in artificial intelligence, cognitive robotics, psycholinguistics, psychological modeling, education, human-machine interaction, the health sciences and sociocultural careers may be interested in majoring. The cognitive science BS is divided into two streams. Students taking the computational emphasis will focus on understanding the mind from a perspective informed by computer science and artificial intelligence. Students taking the neuroscience emphasis will focus on understanding the mind from a biological perspective.
