University Majors

University of California, Davis
Chemistry B.S. (Applied Chemistry: Forensic Chemistry)

The Forensic Chemistry emphasis provides undergraduate students with the tools to understand and perform the chemical analyses most often applied in the analysis of trace evidentiary materials encountered in the legal system. The prosecution of criminals (and the defense of the accused) often relies on the ability of forensic scientists to reliably identify and quantify evidence, such as glass fragments, fibers, inks, and controlled substances. The emphasis provides the background to help choose appropriate methods of analysis and to understand their importance and limitations. The program draws upon numerous disciplines from outside of the classical chemistry degree to include courses in statistics, environmental toxicology, biological sciences, and environmental science and policy.
