Linguistics B.A.

The BA in Linguistics undertakes the scientific study of the structure and function of language and its use and change in various cultural and social settings. Through their training in the analysis of languages, our students develop critical thinking skills, analytical skills, and reading, writing and research skills, as well as an appreciation for the diversity and dynamic nature of human languages and cultures in the U.S. and the world.

Linguistics graduates pursue careers in education as language teachers and teachers of English as a Second Language, in government, such as the Foreign Service, as supervisors of language training programs or translators and interpreters, in publishing as lexicographers for the development of dictionaries or writers of foreign language textbooks, in technical writing of manuals, catalogs, and instructional materials; others continue for advanced degrees and pursue academic careers in linguistics or professional careers in law and in the computer industry as computational linguists building programs for language processing of spoken and written language.
