San Diego State University
Religious Studies B.A.

The study of religion helps create effective world citizens. Religion molds the lives of individual people and helps form the human story of almost every culture. Therefore the study of religion helps us to understand human behavior, and human history; it helps us interpret world events, and it helps us understand each other. Part of the liberal arts, religious studies uses a variety of disciplines to understand religious traditions as well as to question the dogmas, stereotypes, and prejudices that may surround those traditions. The study of religion investigates religious symbols, texts, practices, and belief systems, but it also examines the relationship of religion to ethics, contemporary social issues, politics, history, psychology, the sciences, economics, literature, and the arts. Our program is designed for students who live in diverse communities and are curious about themselves and others. This is the kind of major that makes students think about their own lives, their values, and the purpose of life.
