University Majors

San Diego State University
Liberal Studies B.A. with Emphasis in Science

With national awareness of the importance of education on the rise, and classroom enrollments steadily increasing, teachers at the elementary level will be in demand in the coming years, and will continue to play a vital role in our society. In California, individuals who wish to become elementary teachers must complete the liberal studies major, plus a fifth year credential program. Students who complete degrees in other majors must pass the comprehensive Multiple Subject Assessment for Teachers (MSAT) exam prior to entering a credential program. Students must complete courses in the seven major subject areas: language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, arts/humanities, physical education, and human growth and development. Students are required to complete three semesters of foreign language (or the equivalent). Foreign language and linguistics courses are required in the liberal studies major to deepen the student`s understanding of and ability to function effectively in our multicultural American society. In addition, each student must complete a specialization in an approved subject area. Specializations are available in a wide variety of disciplines.
