University Majors

California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo
Psychology B.S.

Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. Psychology majors at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo receive a broad education in psychology through courses required of all psychology majors. Students also specialize in one area of psychology by choosing one of our four psychology concentrations and through their choice of internships, senior project, and elective courses. Our program has a strong focus on application and hands-on experiences. Our faculty members are scholars committed to quality undergraduate teaching that includes attention to issues of culture and diversity. In addition to the core psychology curriculum, students complete a 28-unit concentration in either Applied Social Psychology (ASP), Counseling and Family Psychology (CFP), or Developmental Psychology (DP). The ASP concentration is typically selected by students with interests in social psychology as applied to business, public health, law, or the environment. The CFP concentration is designed for students interested in clinical or counseling psychology. With its focus on development across the lifespan, the DP concentration is chosen by students who want to study developmental psychology. Students may, with the assistance of a faculty advisor, construct their own concentration (Individualized Course of Study) instead of one of the three concentrations described above. Students have designed concentrations that helped prepare them for graduate studies and/or careers related to forensic psychology, multicultural issues, biopsychology, religious studies, organizational psychology, pre-med, etc.
