University Majors

California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo
Liberal Arts & Engineering Studies B.A.

The Bachelor of Arts degree program in Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies, is supported by both the College of Engineering and the College of Liberal Arts and is open to all students at Cal Poly. The LAES major is not an engineering degree; it is a new interdisciplinary degree program. The LAES program is a hybrid study of engineering and technology components enriched with the appropriate features of culture, arts and the humanities which encourage students to see engineering, the sciences and humanistic study as interconnected and equally valid methods of asking the same essential questions about the world around us. LAES provides an avenue of focused interdisciplinary study that includes specializations in the study of sound and music, theater, public policy, interactive design, intercultural communication, and a wide range of other innovative technical careers in education, community development, commerce and the arts. The curriculum allows LAES students, in collaboration with students from all other Cal Poly majors, to participate in development teams working on national and international technology and culture projects. To further prepare students for work with diverse teams that include participants from across the globe, the program strongly encourages students to spend three to six months studying and/or working abroad. The LAES program prepares students for a wide range of innovative careers in emerging professional fields that combine skills and interests in engineering, the arts, technology, and culture, and also prepares them for further study in graduate school.
